Empowering the Community through Literature
Words by Elvida Sydney
Sbusiso Mnguni, a 31-year-old book enthusiast, has always felt a deep connection to the written word. Before his father passed away, the family moved around quite a bit. Then, when he was around 10-years-old, they settled at his maternal grandmother’s house. “I had a normal childhood, I suppose. I think I was attracted to books because I’m an introvert and I’ve always felt a disconnect with the rest of the world,” he reflected.
Passionate about books, writing, and photography, StreetLit – Sbusiso’s second-hand bookshop at Ballito Lifestyle in The Studios – is a reflection of these interests. Although he keeps every kind of book, he aims to cater more to obscure or avant-garde interests, which are often overlooked in mainstream culture; hence, he tries to focus more on collecting a wide range of classics and collectables.
Founded by the Denis Hurley Centre, StreetLit’s mission is to empower homeless individuals by providing them with a means to earn a living through book sales. The programme has left a lasting impact on Sbusiso’s life since he joined and continues to do so as he navigates life and the industry of books. “I’ve come to be more tolerant of people’s various interests, whether it be their politics or general preferences, without necessarily aligning with opposing views.”
Being part of the Lifestyle and The Studios community has given Sbusiso the confidence to curate StreetLit as a reflection of his own interests, adding a personal touch and using it as a form of expression rather than purely commercial. “I envision the bookshop as a bridge between mainstream and niche markets, where everyone can find a piece of themselves or be inspired to broaden their literary horizon,” he said.
Sbusiso’s love for books developed later in life, because where he’s from, reading for leisure is a foreign concept. However, when he decided to teach himself English, books became an essential resource. He naturally gravitates towards solitary pursuits, and reading, writing, and occasionally attending book clubs have become his favourite activities.
When I asked him to recommend a book to someone just starting to read, he suggested The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo. “This was the first work of fiction I read, and its captivating narrative drew me in so much that I read it twice,” he said. Set against the backdrop of politics and censorship in Nigeria, it’s a well-written young adult Nigerian tale that speaks to the human condition and ultimately resilience amidst destructive political forces.
As a one-man operation, Sbusiso runs StreetLit with the occasional help of his brother. You can find him on Instagram or visit the store. He’s also developing new skills in book restoration and miniature book art, with plans to offer these services soon.
